Patients with PAD have a chronic disease characterizedby a moderate-to-severe impairment in walkingability. There are limited treatment options forthese patients because surgery or angioplasty isreserved for the most severely affected,41 and there isonly one approved drug for the treatment of intermittentclaudication.42 In the present study, exercisetraining resulted in clinically important improvementsin peak exercise capacity, walking efficiency, and claudication pain severity. These changes inexercise performance may translate to increasedactivity in the home and work environments. Thus, asupervised exercise rehabilitation program should beconsidered an important treatment option forpatients disabled from PAD. Future studies will beneeded to address the role of exercise training inpatients with PAD and other comorbid conditionssuch as diabetes or coronary artery disease.
