Could the public ever believe that ESPN-so righteous in its attacks on corruption in sport-will be objective in reporting on the Disney empire? And what about the growing conflicts of the agent/marketing/events firms such as IMG?? When IMG produces a made-for-television golf, tennis, or skating event, filled, with its own stable of athletes (who may or may not receive guaranteed appearance fees), can this be legitimately promoted as a "competition"? Most of the public recognizes that professional wresting is phony. In the world of conglomerate sports, wresting may not be alone. NBC sank millions into the XFL, its joint venture with the World Wresting Federation. But all the media genius and promotional expertise could not rescue a product that was inferior at its core. The players were simply not "prime time," so the XFL could not be positioned as a major league operation. And major league sports simply don't sell in prime time.
