It should be noted that the large number of
reprimands per minute in classes taught by student
teachers does not necessarily indicate severe behaviour
problems. It is not pupils’ misbehaviour
which has been counted, but only what student
teachers or the cooperative teacher perceived as
misbehaviour; thus, the problem might stem from
their perception. Sieber (1979) found that, on the
average, a teacher reacts to behaviour problems
about 87 times daily, or 16,000 annually. The
number of student teacher reprimands while teaching
a class, as found in the present research, is
similar and even significantly higher. If we refer to
the number of comments by student teachers
separately, the number is similar, whereas the
number of adult comments in classes taught by
student teachers is significantly higher than those
found in Sieber’s research (1979).
