She is giving birth and rests her hands(now lost) upon two felines, probably leopards, which form the arm-rests of her throne. They may also indicate another of her aspects, that of tamer or ruler of wild animals. If so, she would prefigure a great sequence of mother goddesses Inanna/Ishtar in ancient Sumeria and Babylon, Isis in ancient Egypt and Cybele in ancient Anatolia and Greece. They all walk with lions or sit upon a lion throne; bele even rides a chariot drawn by lions.
