The headteachers interviewed in these schools reinforced the view of the heads of department that whole-school staff development policies had evolved with the aim of enabling all staff with management responsibilities to be involved in the managerial issues that arose in school. This was achieved through regular, frequently termly, opportunities for heads of department to meet with members of the senior management team to identify personal areas for professional development.
